One of the biggest events on the annual AIC Calendar will be held this Thursday and Friday with the 26th AIC Track and Field Championships being contested. This year the AIC Track and Field Championships will again include the 8 AIC member Colleges, along with “AIC Guest”- Ambrose Treacy College (ATC). This will be the third year of ATC competing in these major championships. The Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre (QSAC) will host over 800 athletes competing over the two days of the carnival. Day 2 (Friday), the QSAC grandstand will be filled with over 3000 student spectators. The inclusivity of the AIC will be on display with primary students competing at the same championships as secondary school competitors. This is important element of the AIC Championships as students in all of our school communities ‘Grow Together’.
Marist College Ashgrove will be out to continue their historic run of victories in the Secondary School Championships. This year, Marist College Ashgrove will be aiming to claim an incredible 10th AIC Secondary Championship in a row. Marist College Ashgrove will also be out to defend the Primary Track and field championship after claiming the ‘Double’ in 2023.
The Associated Independent Colleges competition is the breeding ground for some of the best athletes in both Queensland and Australia. St Laurence’s Track and Field Team Captain Terrell Thorne is one of these world-class athletes after he competed earlier this year at the IAAF U20 World Athletics Championships in Lima, Peru. Terrell made the final of the 400m event. A number of AIC athletes also represented both Australia and other Oceania nations at the Oceania Athletics Championships earlier this year. These included Australian representatives Max Jones (Villanova- Javelin), Asher Parkin (Marist College Ashgrove- Steeple Chase) and Bailey Burns (Iona- Long Jump). Boys who represented nations from across the Pacific region included Hunter Jahnke (St Laurence’s- Tonga) and Marist college Ashgrove trio – Isaiah Burgess (Papua New Guinea), Jack Mahuru (Papua New Guinea) and Jonathon Kirk (Fiji).
