The 2026 Associated Independent Colleges (AIC) Rugby Union season delivered an outstanding competition, highlighted by exceptional performances across all age groups and one of the most fiercely contested First XV Premiership races in recent years. Week after week, schools produced high-quality rugby, with the premiership remaining undecided until the closing stages of the season, reflecting the strength and depth of rugby across the Association.

Rugby Aggregate Champions: Marist Ashgrove claim another historic title

Marist College Ashgrove once again demonstrated the strength of its rugby program, securing the 2026 AIC Rugby Aggregate Championship—its 24th Aggregate Shield and another milestone in an extraordinary history of success.

The title was built on impressive performances throughout the age divisions, with Marist capturing seven of the twelve aggregate premierships, including a clean sweep of all four Open age-group competitions. The achievement highlights the depth of talent and consistency of the program from the senior teams through to the younger age groups.

The race for the remaining podium positions was equally competitive, with Iona College finishing as Aggregate runners-up and Padua College securing third place after another strong season across the competition.

First XV Premiership: Marist College Ashgrove Claim Title

For the fifth consecutive season, the AIC First XV Premiership was decided in an effective “Grand Final” in Round 7. For the second year running, the final-round clash between Marist College Ashgrove and Padua College would determine the destination of the premiership trophy.

Marist College Ashgrove entered the match undefeated and needing only victory to secure the title outright, while Padua College had the opportunity to earn a share of the premiership with a win.

Marist College Ashgrove rose to the occasion with a composed and clinical performance, recording a convincing victory to secure an undefeated First XV Premiership. It was a richly deserved title in one of the closest and most competitive AIC seasons in recent memory.

Their campaign was built on a series of outstanding performances in matches that carried premiership implications. Perhaps the defining moment came in Round 4 against traditional rivals St Laurence’s College, when Marist scored after the final siren to snatch victory in one of the season’s classic contests.

Completing an undefeated AIC First XV season is a remarkable achievement. Throughout the campaign, Marist College Ashgrove combined dynamic attacking rugby with disciplined, resolute defence, demonstrating the consistency, resilience and composure required of worthy premiers.

Primary Rugby: Building the Future

The future of AIC Rugby looks brighter than ever following a fantastic season of Year 5 and 6 rugby. Week after week, the primary divisions showcased outstanding participation and emerging talent across all teams and ability levels. Whether playing in the A team or the C team, every primary school student wore their jersey with the same pride as those representing their school in the First XV.

These young players form the foundation of the future AIC Rugby competition, and their enthusiasm and sportsmanship were a true highlight of the season.
