Changes to AIC Australian Rules Football Competition in 2027

The Associated Independent Colleges (AIC) Member Committee has approved a revised Australian Rules Football competition structure, with the changes set to be introduced from the 2027 season to support the continued growth and future development of the game across the Association.

Under the new structure, all Primary School fixtures (Years 5 and 6) will be played on Friday afternoons, while all Secondary School fixtures, including Open Division matches, will be played on Saturday mornings.

Since AFL was reintroduced into the AIC Secondary School sporting program in 2019, participation has grown significantly. Schools that initially fielded three secondary teams now field up to nine, while Primary School participation has more than doubled over the same period.

The change also presents new opportunities for member Colleges to work collaboratively with the AFL and AFL Queensland to develop on-campus playing facilities, strengthening the long-term sustainability of the game within AIC schools.

The AIC Management Committee acknowledges that scheduling changes may create challenges for some students and families. Colleges will work closely with families to manage any conflicts, with these considerations forming an important part of the review process.
