The 2025 AIC Track and Field Championships once again delivered two unforgettable days of outstanding performances, school spirit, and fierce competition. Held at the Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre (QSAC), the event remains one of the largest independent school athletics carnivals in the country — featuring an incredible 206 events across both primary and secondary divisions.
With many of Queensland and Australia’s best young athletes in action, the Championships continue to demonstrate the strength of school-based athletics. A quick glance at this year’s Australian Athletics team at the World Championships in Tokyo reveals no fewer than three AIC alumni competing on the world stage — a true reflection of the pathway the competition provides.
Marist College Ashgrove Create History
Marist College Ashgrove extended their remarkable run of dominance, claiming both the Primary and Secondary Aggregate Championships in a historic double victory.
The Ashgrove team secured a record 11th consecutive Secondary title and an impressive fifth consecutive Primary title. In an unprecedented achievement, Marist also claimed all eight year/age-level trophies — the first time in AIC history that one school has swept every age division.
During their victory speech, Track and Field Captains Ted Clarke, Zac Milligan, and Finlay Keogan praised the standard of competition and acknowledged the effort and dedication shown by their teammates throughout the season.
“We would like to thank Mr Richard Graham and Mr Rob Martin for their leadership of the program. They have driven the whole team to this incredible performance,” the captains said, paying tribute to Marist’s coaching staff and the culture of hard work within the program.
Tight Battle for Minor Placings
While Marist dominated the overall standings, the contest for the remaining aggregate positions was thrilling right until the final event.
Iona College secured second place in the Secondary Aggregate Championship, edging out St Peters Lutheran College in third. The difference between fourth and seventh place was a mere 6.5 points, highlighting just how competitive this year’s carnival was.
Iona also showed their strength in the Primary division, finishing second behind Marist, with Padua College rounding out the top three.
Record-Breaking Performances
The Championships once again produced outstanding individual efforts, with four individual records and one relay record broken across the two days.
-
Benjamin Cohen (St Peters) – set a new 12 Years 200m record with a time of 26.01s.
-
Aaron Doyle (Marist College Ashgrove) – broke the Year 6 100m record in 12.65s, showing a bright future for AIC sprinting.
-
Aiden Levitt (Iona College) – produced a superb run in the 14 Years 800m, setting a new record of 2:03.22, breaking a 23-year-old mark.
-
Bailey Brandon (St Patrick’s College) – cleared 1.53m to win the Year 6 High Jump, continuing the event’s proud legacy of outstanding performances.
-
Marist College Ashgrove Open 4 x 100m Relay (Division 1) – capped off the Championships in style, breaking a 21-year-old AIC record with a brilliant 43.00s, surpassing the previous mark set in 2004.
A Celebration of School Spirit
The AIC sincerely thanks Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre (QSAC) for hosting another successful Championship, and Queensland Athletics officials for their professionalism in ensuring the event was conducted to the highest standards.
Special appreciation is extended to the host Colleges — St Laurence’s College and St Peters Lutheran College — and to Villanova College for managing results and recording.
AIC also acknowledges the tireless efforts of staff from all member schools, and the outstanding support of the thousands of parents and student spectators who filled QSAC over the two days. More than 3,000 students attended Friday’s sessions, creating an atmosphere that truly reflected the spirit and camaraderie of AIC sport.
Congratulations
Congratulations once again to Marist College Ashgrove — the 2025 AIC Primary and Secondary Track and Field Champions — and to every athlete, coach, and supporter who made this year’s carnival such a success.
