Tricky conditions don’t deter AIC Golfers: AIC Golf Championships Report

The 2026 AIC Golf Championships brought together a full field of secondary teams from all eight AIC Member Colleges, along with AIC Guest College Ambrose Treacy College, at Keperra Country Golf Club.

While the course was presented in outstanding condition, Mother Nature ensured the day would be a true test of golf. Strong winds throughout the championship challenged every competitor, placing a premium on patience, course management and consistency.

Each year, teams compete for two prestigious shields: the Balharry Shield, awarded to the Secondary Team Nett Champions, and the Team Gross Shield, presented to the team recording the lowest gross score of the day. St Laurence’s College entered the event as defending Balharry Shield holders, while Iona College was aiming to retain the Team Gross Championship.

The team championships are contested by teams of five golfers, with the best four scores counting towards the overall team total in both the Nett and Gross competitions.

Marist College Ashgrove claimed the historic Balharry Shield with an outstanding team nett score of 288, finishing ahead of Iona College (300) and St Edmund’s College (309).

In the Team Gross Championship, Iona College successfully defended its title with a winning score of 317. St Edmund’s College finished runner-up on 326, with Villanova College just one shot further back in third place on 327.

Iona – Gross Champions 2026

The individual championships once again showcased the exceptional standard of golf within the AIC competition.

The Secondary Nett Championship produced one of the closest finishes in recent history, with just a single stroke separating the top two players. Congratulations to Jake R (Marist College Ashgrove), who claimed the Nett Championship Pennant with an excellent score of 68. Asher R (Iona College) finished runner-up after an impressive round of 69.

The Secondary Gross Championship was won by Matthys V (St Patrick’s College), who successfully defended the title he won in 2025. Matthys produced a superb round of 72 to finish four shots clear of the field. Thomas B (St Edmund’s College) claimed second place on 76, with James T (Iona College) also finishing on 76, with second and third place determined on countback. Producing scores of this quality in the challenging wind conditions was a remarkable achievement.

In the Primary Individual Competition, Oliver A (St Patrick’s College) completed a dominant performance by winning both the Gross and Nett Championships. Alfred K (St Patrick’s College) finished runner-up in both events.

The AIC congratulates all students who competed in this year’s championships and thanks Keperra Country Golf Club for once again hosting the event and presenting the course in outstanding condition.

The AIC also acknowledges the valued support of Griffith University, whose partnership continues to enhance opportunities and experiences for students across AIC sport throughout 2026.
