Villanova Creates AIC Basketball History with Major Double Victory

A historic AIC Basketball season has wrapped up in 2025 with Villanova College cementing their place in the record books, claiming both the First V Premiership and the prestigious Basketball Aggregate Championship.

In one of the Association’s largest and most competitive sports with close to 240 teams participating, the Aggregate Shield is regarded as the ultimate measure of depth and consistency. Villanova reclaimed the title after Iona College ended Villanova’s near-decade dominance in 2024.

“The Basketball Aggregate is a reflection of the collective effort of over 400 boys who committed themselves to training and match play each week. To see teams at every year level contribute to this outcome is incredibly rewarding. It speaks to the strength of our program, the dedication of our coaches and the support of the wider Villa community,” explained Villanova Basketball Coordinator, Liam Johnston.

St Laurence’s College and Iona College finished equal second on the aggregate table, underlining the fierce competition across all divisions.

A Legacy of Excellence

Villanova also achieved a remarkable milestone by winning their fifth consecutive outright First V Premiership — equalling Marist College Ashgrove’s historic run from 2002–2006. Even more impressively, Villanova has remained undefeated in AIC competition since the Covid-shortened 2020 season.

“Securing our fifth consecutive undefeated AIC premiership is a true testament to the character and commitment of these young men who proudly wear the green and gold,” said Villanova’s First V coach, Jordan Mullen. “Our seniors have led with humility and embodied the Villanova spirit, leaving a lasting legacy for those who follow.”

St Edmund’s College finished runners-up in the First V competition with just one loss, while St Laurence’s claimed third.
