This weekend will see the commencement of the AIC Competiton seasons for the Chess, Football and Rugby.
Preparations for this season commenced for many of the teams back in October, with preparations continuing during Term 1. Immediately after Term 1 sport was completed, whole school preparations for the traditional winter season sports ramped up further.
Over the course of the Easter school holidays, each school was involved in a variety of activities including camps, clinics, tournaments and international tours to finalise their preparations for the upcoming season. Highlights included both Padua sending Rugby and Football teams to the UK and Europe, both St Laurence’s and St Patrick’s winning divisions at the Ballymore Cup, the multiple Haka’s schools were challenged by, performed by visiting New Zealand opposition and St Laurence’s claiming a division of the EREA Competition. Chess Season Preview
Chess will begin on Friday afternoon with record numbers of Chess teams competing this year. For the first time in AIC, a large number of schools will have ‘C’ chess teams in the different divisions. St Laurence’s will look to defend the First IV Trophy they won in 2023, with St Peters looking to defend the Chess Aggregate Shield they claimed last year.
Football Season Preview
Football continues to be an incredibly popular sport in the Association. 248 teams will compete in the 2024 AIC Football Competition. This year Iona will be out to defend the First XI Trophy they claimed with an undefeated season in 2023 and St Laurence’s will aim to defend the Aggregate Shield they won 12 months ago.
Rugby Season PreviewÂ
The number of students participating in the Rugby in the Association has increased in 2024. This year 193 teams will compete in the AIC Rugby Union competition. St Laurence’s will be looking to again win the First XV Rugby Premiership- with the school on a streak of having won four consecutive AIC First XV Premierships. This year, Iona College will be looking to defend the Rugby Aggregate shield they claimed in 2023.
