A clash between Villanova College and Padua College this Saturday will shed more light on the AIC First XV rugby union competition after an entertaining Round 1 drew to a close.

Villanova’s 53-12 win over St Edmund’s College ended a round that spanned 11 days due to representative commitments for some schools.

The wait didn’t bother Villanova, who provided four players to the Queensland Schoolboys teams.

Fullback Hamish Muir was one of those Villanova players and he was impressive against a resilient St Edmund’s, scoring two tries at Mulkerin Oval. His efforts helped Villanova pull away after St Edmund’s had drawn within 17-12 in a match that was closer than the final score indicated.

Villanova will face a tough match with Padua, which toppled the strong Iona College squad 24-10 in their opening match.

Padua flanker Sam Mata’afa scored three tries against a valiant Iona team without some key players who were unavailable due to their commitments with Wynnum Manly in the grand final of rugby league’s Mal Meninga Cup competition.

Marist College Ashgrove will attempt to improve its strong home record against St Patrick’s College when they meet at McMahon Oval. Ashgrove comes off a solid win over St Peter’s Lutheran College while St Patrick’s had a lot to like from their close opening-round loss to St Laurence’s College.

St Patrick’s will welcome back flyhalf Connor O’Reagan who missed the opening match with a hand injury while Ashgrove will enjoy playing in front of their home crowd for the first time this season.

Iona and St Peter’s will meet at Davine Oval with both teams seeking their first victory of the season.

At Crawford Oval, St Laurence’s will play their first home match against St Edmund’s. St Laurence’s will be wary of St Edmund’s talented players, including flyhalf Ethan Bauer, while Laurie’s will look to build on the momentum of their win over St Pat’s two weeks ago.
