What another excellent term of AIC sport! Rugby League was trialled and it was a huge success and two schools showed their absolute dominance in the other two sports on offer. St Peters have won their 8th consecutive tennis aggregate while Villanova were equally impressive on the basketball court with their 5th consecutive basketball crown. SPLC and Villa were brilliant on court and their respective depths are second to none. St Peters won 10 from 13 age group premierships. Villanova won 7 out 12 premierships. Lauries have been rock solid again this year to retain overall second place in tennis for the 4th year in a row. St Pats claimed runners up for the second year for the overall basketball champion school. The standard of Term 3 sport has never been better. Congratulations to all premiership teams and once again to St Peters and Villanova who continue to set the bench mark in this trimester’s court sports.
Well done to Iona College who have taken out the inaugural Rugby League title. As mentioned, Rugby League was introduced as a trial sport for 2019 and the association would like to thank and congratulate the 7 competing schools and their staff, along with the NRL Schools Committee who assisted greatly to support this sport get off the ground. It’s been a couple of years in the planning and everyone involved showed passion and dedication for its success.
It was a very closely contested competition with Ashgrove winning two premierships, Iona also with two and Padua and Pats sharing one. Ashgrove had to wait until Round 7 to take out the First XIII title from Iona and there was only 3.5 points between Iona, Ashgrove and Padua for the overall aggregate.
It’s another example of the diversity of competition within the association where we have 3 different Colleges share the top honours!
