Three teams remain unbeaten in the AIC First XV rugby competition after an entertaining second round of matches.
Villanova College, Marist Ashgrove and St Laurence’s College kept their unbeaten records intact with victories last Saturday while Iona College notched its first win of the season.
Ashgrove centres Josh Radford and Campbell Moller played strongly as the blue and gold team defeated St Patrick’s College 48-0 at McMahon Oval.
St Patrick’s tested Ashgrove with encouraging patches of play spearheaded by backline leader Jack McDonald.
But Ashgrove kept its perfect defensive record in place for the season, extending a 22-0 halftime lead.
That record will be tested by St Laurence’s when the teams meet at Runcorn on Saturday.
St Laurence’s were too strong for St Edmund’s in a 62-0 win that featured high-quality play in attack and defence.
St Edmund’s will host St Patrick’s this weekend as both teams seek their first victory of the season.
Villanova will chase its third consecutive win when it hosts Iona at Andrew Slack Oval, buoyed by a nailbiting 23-19 result against Padua College last Saturday.
Fullback Hamish Muir, who scored two tries in the opening round, crossed inside the first 10 minutes to give Villanova an early lead against Padua.
Winger Robbie Agnew surged down the left side for a try that gave Villanova a 12-0 halftime lead.
But Padua began an excellent fightback with tries to Jaidyn Walker, Chris Bozzi and Leighton Whippy that placed them within reach of the lead.
Villanova sealed the result when forward Gus Godwin crossed from a lineout, ending an entertaining match.
Iona scored its first win of the season despite the resistance of St Peter’s Lutheran College in a 31-10 result at Davine Oval.
Centres Max Plath and Charlie Kwock Sun Barker scored tries that drove Iona to a 24-10 halftime lead.
St Peter’s first try of the season was a memorable cross-field movement that resulted in the ball touching seven sets of hands.
