Congratulations to St Laurences College and Marist College Ashgrove for taking out the primary and secondary cross country titles respectively. St Patrick’s College successfully hosted the annual championships at Curlew Park for the first time yesterday.
It was clear from the first race that the Lauries junior squad were there to compete! By winning the Year 5 Aggregate and placing 2nd in the Year 6’s St Laurences took out the Primary Shield, the first time another college apart from Ashgrove or Iona have taken the title. Iona were a close second, with Ashgrove and Villanova placing third.
The secondary competition was closely fought also with a number of schools vying for top three after the first few races. Iona were very good in the 12 Years but saw the rise of Padua and St Pats in this age group. Ashgrove just edged out Iona in the 13 Years but obliterated the field in the 15 Years, winning the age by a staggering 52 points. Villanova won the 14 Years division, helped along by a first and second place in their 4km race. St Peters came through to win the 16 Years age group, 4 points ahead of Ashgrove. St Laurences College finished the day the same way they started – with a win for their Open boys. One of the other lovely stories of the day was Padua College coming in 3rd overall – one of their best ever result in a major carnival! Obviously a good ‘pay day’ for their hard work over the last term.
It was great to see 5 different schools share the age aggregates but it was Ashgrove who deserved the overall championship with a fantastic display of their program’s depth. Well done Ashgrove!
