Iona claims First VI and Volleyball Aggregate double! – Volleyball Season Review

In 2025, Iona College claimed the ‘double’ by winning both of the major AIC Volleyball competitions, the First VI Premiership and Volleyball Aggregate. This was the second year in succession that Iona had won both titles. This is an incredible achievement in one of the strongest school Volleyball competitions in Australia. This year the AIC Volleyball season included 170 teams from Years 7-12 and representing the 8 AIC Member Colleges.

Aggregate

Iona were eager to defend the Aggregate Shield they have held since 2023. Iona teams were prominent in the majority of the premiership tables with the bayside school’s teams securing a premiership or shared premiership in 7 of the 12 ‘aggregate’ divisions. They were again challenged for the aggregate shield by St Laurence’s who finished 2nd in 2025. Between the two schools, Iona and St Laurence’s. they have claimed every ‘Aggregate Shield’ since 2011. The biggest improver on the Aggregate points table in 2025 was St Edmund’s. The boys from Ipswich moved from 5th place in 2024 to 3rd this year and with very strong results in the junior divisions will look to challenge further in years to come.

Iona’s Volleyball Coordinator Ms. Karen Otway highlighted the strength of the AIC competition in celebrating Iona’s achievement. “The 2025 AIC volleyball competition was filled with intense three-set matches, with teams battling hard for victory each week. I was incredibly proud of our boys for their determination and resilience, even when trailing on the scoreboard. Many of our wins required a tough fight, highlighting the strength of the AIC competition. It was an exciting season, played in great spirit and an electrifying atmosphere, with parents enthusiastically cheering from the stands. Congratulations to the Iona boys and coaches who did a great job in taking out this year’s Volleyball Aggregate, a title not easily won. “ Ms. Otway said.

First XI Premiership

Winning a “First Team” premiership undefeated is incredibly challenging, winning the same premiership two years in a row and remaining undefeated does not occur too often. This has been the incredible achievement of the Iona First VI Volleyball team. Throughout the 6 games of the AIC season (one game was abandoned due to Cyclone Alfred), the Iona team only lost two sets of Volleyball. The Iona team played with great skill and teamwork and overcame the pressure of playing what effectively was a grand final in Round 7 against St Edmund’s. Padua, St Edmund’s and St Laurence’s shared the runner-up title for the season.

Iona’s First VI Volleyball coach, Mr Rolf Vogelbusch was incredibly proud of the Iona First VI team. “Our 1sts Volleyball team successfully defended their Premiership title for a second year after achieving a Bronze medal in the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup in December. The team have proven through discipline, hard work and dedication at training they deserve the title again, undefeated. The boys displayed not only a high level of athleticism but also skills and knowledge beyond their years. A pleasure to coach a great group of boys.” Mr Vogelbusch said.
