Marist College Ashgrove and St Patrick’s College will take their undefeated records into Saturday’s second round of the AIC Football First XI competition.
Both teams posted victories during an entertaining start to the competition which included goals across all matches.
St Patrick’s edged out St Laurence’s 2-1 in a match that went down to the final whistle at Curlew Park. The relatively young St Laurence’s squad played with great spirit against the Shorncliffe team in a high-quality match.
St Patrick’s will travel to Ashgrove this weekend to meet a team that opened its season in style with an 8-1 victory over St Peters.
Zac Kierpal scored four goals for Ashgrove while Ben Braunstorfer and Will Gullo each grabbed doubles in a positive start for the blue and gold team following their recent alliance with Brisbane City.
St Peters has much to look forward to this season under new coach Jon McKain, who received 16 Socceroos caps during a playing career that included an appearance at the 2004 Olympics.
Villanova began well with a 5-2 away win over St Edmund’s. Peter Klaassen, in his third year of First XI football, netted a hat trick of goals.
St Edmund’s two goals were encouraging against the strong Villanova team, boosting their confidence of a good showing against St Laurence’s this Saturday at Runcorn.
Iona College and Padua College fought out a close match last weekend, which went to Iona 3-2 after a brilliant free kick by James Taylor sealed the result.
Both teams will be encouraged by that performance as Padua prepares for a trip to Villanova while Iona hosts St Peters.
