Villanova College and Iona College will meet on Saturday in a much-anticipated AIC First XI Football match after an entertaining second round left four teams with unbeaten records.
Villanova will play this weekend without captain Peter Klaassen, who has kicked five goals in the opening two weeks of the competition. He netted twice last Saturday as Villanova edged Padua College 3-0.
Klaassen has representative duties this weekend, leaving his talented teammates to take on the in-form Iona at Villanova’s playing fields.
Iona, chasing its third consecutive premiership, has a perfect record after two rounds following a stirring 3-2 home victory over St Peter’s.
The visitors led 2-0 in the second half in an excellent showing after a slow start in round 1. But Iona clawed back via a double to James Taylor and a goal to Jordan Anderson.
St Patrick’s College and Marist Ashgrove remain unbeaten after their second-round match ended in a 1-1 draw at Ashgrove.
The home team opened the scoring via Zac Keirpal before St Patrick’s equalised through a free kick by Kel Neil. A late goal by Ashgrove was disallowed because of an offside ruling.
St Patrick’s travel to St Edmund’s College this weekend while Ashgrove will be away to St Laurence’s College.
St Laurence’s responded to a close opening-round loss with a 4-1 home win over St Edmund’s.
St Edmund’s scored a vital goal with a second-half penalty but were unable to bridge the gap as St Laurence’s scored with 15 minutes remaining. George Michalopoulos scored twice for St Laurence’s while Jean Manirambona and Harry Pegg each kicked goals.
