Round 2 AIC Action

Round 2 AIC Sport included a number of tight contests across AFL, Cricket and Volleyball fixtures.

AFL
In the First XVIII competition Padua recorded a very good victory in the annual Andrews-Cameron Cup contested against Marist College Ashgrove. This was the first win by Padua since the inception of this trophy honouring two of the most prominent Brisbane Lions and their proud links to both Colleges. In front of a large crowd, the Padua College midfield was able to control the clearances and give their forward line quality delivery. Marist College Ashgrove never gave up and pushed through to the final siren with a spirited effort by the boys in Blue and Gold. In the other First XVIII games, there were victories for Iona, Villanova and St Laurence’s.

Cricket
Showers lingered over Brisbane for the majority of the day which made conditions tricky for AIC Cricketers. Players frequently had to drag covers on and off turf pitches in an effort to allow games to continue. After a challenging day, three First XI teams secured victories to start the season undefeated- congratulations to St Peters, Iona and Marist College. An excellent team performance by Villanova allowed them to win their first game of the season. In Round 3, two of the undefeated teams will face off against each other – Marist College Ashgrove will play Iona at Ashgrove.

VolleybalI
In what ended up being the game of the round, and potentially the season, St Peters and St Laurence’s played out a thrilling five set epic game in Round 2. St Peters struck early, claiming a 2-0 lead. St Laurence’s were able to save a match point to St Peters in the third set, eventually winning the set and the fourth set to force a deciding 5th set. St Peters were then able to save two match points to bring the scores level at 14 all in the final set. After almost 2 and a quarter hours, St Laurence’s secured the win, 16-14 in the final set. In other matches, both Iona and Villanova continued their undefeated starts to the season and Marist College Ashgrove won their first AIC game of 2024.

Swimming
There were some outstanding performances at both AIC Warm Up Swim Meets held last Friday night at Iona and Marist College Ashgrove. School swimming squads continue to train hard and the Friday night meets are an excellent opportunity for students to push for selection in their school team to compete at the AIC Championships. The AIC Swimming Championships will be held on Tuesday March 5. This week the AIC Swimming Championship Warm Up Meet will be held at St Peters.
