St Patrick’s College have stunned the AIC First V basketball competition but another solid test looms in Saturday’s third round.
Last Saturday, St Patrick’s recorded only the second win since 2016 over Marist College Ashgrove with an entertaining 69-67 result at Shorncliffe.
St Patrick’s surged through the first half, building a 12-point lead at the break, but had to defy the expected Marist Ashgrove fightback before an enthusiastic Shorncliffe crowd.
The win sets up St Patrick’s for Saturday’s away clash with St Edmund’s College, which secured its first win for the season with a 67-52 result against St Laurence’s College.
The results underlined the competitive nature of this year’s First V competition. In round one, St Laurence’s defeated St Patrick’s while St Edmund’s lost to Villanova College
St Laurence’s will provide a test for Marist Ashgrove when they meet at Ashgrove this Saturday while Villanova College travels to Iona in a clash of the unbeaten teams.
Villanova recorded a strong 61-47 win over Padua College last weekend off the back of defensive pressure at La Cordelle Centre.
Harry Rouhliadeff was among Villanova’s best with 19 while Lucas Boylan scored 14.
They will meet an Iona team buoyed by victories over Padua and St Peter’s Lutheran College to start their season.
The Marist Ashgrove and Iona players have similar size and speed across the court meaning it may be difficult to split the teams according to Villanova Basketball Coordinator Sean O’Neill. There was little between the teams in a pre-season match.
In Saturday’s final match, the only two schools yet to claim a win will take each other as Padua travels to Indooroopilly to play St Peter’s.
